The Water Heavy Equipment Operator performs skilled work and related duties in the operation of heavy mechanized equipment to construct, repair, replace, and maintain City water lines for the Water Department.

Operates heavy equipment such as backhoes, hydro-hammers, cranes, large loaders, dozers, and conveyor loadersPerforms tasks such as patching, grading, hauling material, pipeline excavation and backfillSnow removal dutyServices, maintains, and makes minor mechanical adjustments and minor repairs on assigned equipmentMay act as leadworkerMay assist in training other employees in equipment operationPerforms additional duties as assigned


High School Diploma or GED.

At least 4 years progressively responsible experience in the operation of medium and heavy equipment. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Working knowledge of the practices and techniques of heavy equipment operation and maintenance; knowledge of safety practices common to the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment. Knowledge of water line construction and repair

Ability to understand and follow complex instructions relative to job assignment; perform strenuous physical work; and work overtime, call back duty, and standby with a thirty-minute response time.

Skill in the operation of heavy equipment.

Licenses, Certificates or Equipment Required:
Colorado Class A Commercial Driver's License. Colorado Class II Water Distribution and/or Colorado Class II Collection Certificate or the ability to obtain within a specific time period as directed by departmental policies.

WORKING CONDITIONS Physical Demands: Heavy physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds; frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 30 pounds; considerable hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for operation of heavy equipment and vehicles; speech communication to give instructions and provide technical direction; vision read manuals and monitor equipment gauges; hearing/listening for instructions and warning signals

Work Environment: Works primarily outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and chemicals. Some work may be performed in trenches and/or confined spaces.

Equipment Used: Operates heavy equipment common to utility maintenance and construction.
