Summary: Two Assistant Superintendents jointly supervise the Solid Waste Division and the Streets and Sewers Division of Public Works. Duties are performed under general supervision and are subject to review by the Superintendent of Public Works, the Operations Manager and the Director of Public Works. The Assistant Superintendents ensure that work is performed safely, efficiently and in a timely manner.
Together, the Assistant Superintendents of Public Works supervise, direct and schedule crews who perform a wide variety of work which includes collecting garbage, bulk waste, leaves, and recyclable products, and provide street sweeping, weed mowing and unpaved alley maintenance. They also oversee crews who maintain and repair streets, sewers, and non-electrical traffic control systems. The Assistant Superintendent supervise all classifications of workers who perform general and seasonal maintenance and installation of streets, sewers, and signs, snow removal, and traffic line painting and those who perform general and seasonal solid waste collection, sweeping and mowing services. Most employees in these two divisions work under a collective bargaining agreement.
This position has frequent contact with members of the general public responding to questions and helping to inform the public on matters within the Assistant Superintendent’s oversight. The Assistant performs most of the Superintendent’s duties in his or her absence if assigned to do so.
Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. Position related college courses or other post-high school training such as union apprenticeship preferred. Experience of 5-7 years in public works construction and/or operational areas supervised by this position required. Minimum of 3 years supervisory position or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
General Skill Levels
Knowledge of the methods, equipment, and materials involved in Public Works operations, including proper safety precautions.
Principals of supervision, training and coaching in a collectively bargained work environment.Computer spreadsheet, word processing, email and internet related to performance of the essential functions of the job.Report preparation methods and techniques. Basic mathematics including simple descriptive statics.Managing within a budget. A working understanding of budget preparation.
