Sumter County (pop. 107,056) is one of Florida’s best kept secrets. Situated halfway between Tampa and Orlando, the County is located at the “Crossroads of the Real Florida” where I-75 and the Florida Turnpike intersect. Sumter County is a Constitutional County governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners that employs 192 personnel and administers a total operating budget of approximately $172 million. The County is seeking a Director to oversee the Public Works Division which consists of three branches: Engineering, Operations and Services. The three branches oversee the Division’s eight departments which include Facilities Development, Facilities Maintenance, Transit, Animal Services, Mosquito Control, Parks, Road and Bridge, and Solid Waste. The Division has 80 FTEs and an annual operating budget of approximately $23 million. The successful candidate will be a strong leader and a strategic visionary with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders such as interlocal government agencies, FDOT, the local water management district, and others is essential. Candidates should have an open, communicative management style and the ability to quickly earn the trust and confidence of staff. A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Technical Management or a closely related field is required; Master's degree and PE certification is preferred. Candidates must have at least eight years experience in the field of public works including three years in a senior supervisory position. Experience in traffic engineering, highway design, stormwater, contracts management, and knowledge of community development districts is a plus.
