The SFMTA plans, designs, builds, operates, regulates and maintains one of the most comprehensive transportation networks in the world. The agency directly manages five types of public transit in San Francisco (motor coach, trolley coach, light rail, historic streetcar and cable car) and promotes other forms of transportation including walking, bicycling, taxi and auto use. In addition to overseeing paratransit service for those unable to use fixed-route transit service, the agency also regulates the taxi industry and oversees on- and off-street public parking spaces.

Under broad policy direction from the Director of Transportation, the Director of Sustainable Streets is responsible for coordinating the development of the Agency’s strategic plan, long-range goals, objectives and policies; Developing policy and directs planning, designing, and environmental clearance of capital programs and services in the SFMTA’s multi-modal transportation network, including public transit (“Muni”), regional and private transit coordination, pedestrian public realm and urban street design, bicycle facilities and bicycle sharing, transportation partnerships(including car-sharing and ride sharing), transportation engineering, parking management and enforcement, travel demand management and goods movement. You will oversee street operations which include installation and maintenance of traffic signs, signals, meters and markings; manage off-street parking facilities (include approximately 15,000 spaces in City-owned garages and lots); coordinate closely with City and County agencies (e.g., Planning, Public Works, and the San Francisco County Transportation Authority) and external agencies (e.g., Caltrans and BART) to design, review and develop transportation infrastructure; ensures enforcement of all applicable laws, ordinances, rules and regulations.

The ideal candidate is a decisive leader and manager of people who inspires team-work and values the contributions of staff, management and stakeholders alike. A track record of ‘getting things done’ under sometimes challenging circumstances but in a collaborative and professional manner is sought. A key effort of the Agency is to change the focus of the city to truly multi-modal, giving the successful candidate the opportunity to be a leader in providing livable, active transportation. The new Director will be required to establish and maintain close working relationships with key city leaders, other city departments, external agencies, and the community, which will require exceptional communication skills and political astuteness. A demonstrated change agent who builds consensus along the way and enjoys the challenge of building a cohesive vision out of strong diverse opinions will find this position both challenging and rewarding. A Bachelor’s degree and at least seven years of executive level experience is expected. Master’s degree in transportation planning, transportation engineering, transportation management or a related field is preferred.
