DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS AND UTILITIES/CITY ENGINEER

Located in Pinellas County, on the Gulf Coast, 25 miles west of Tampa, Dunedin (pronounced DONE-EE-DIN) has a small-town feel and atmosphere, yet is a bustling community of over 37,000 residents. One of the oldest towns on the West Coast of Florida, it has a wooded and sub-tropical setting with four miles of picturesque waterfront, a relaxed lifestyle, almost perfect weather, a vibrant economy, and recreational facilities for all ages. The community has earned many honors, including being named Florida’s “City of Excellence” for 2009 by the Florida League of Cities. It was also named in recent years “one of the best places to live on Florida’s West Coast” by Money and Coastal Living magazines. In 2008, one of its many attractions, Caladesi Island, was ranked the #1 Beach in America.
The City is governed and managed under a non-partisan Commission-Manager form of government. The City Manager is the Chief Executive Officer who has responsibility for the oversight of the City departments. With a citywide staff of 339 , the FY 2013 Adopted Operating Budget is $69.1 million and the Capital Budget is $4.4million.
The Director of Public Works & Utilities reports to the Deputy City Manager. This Department has a staff of 151 and a $29.4 million operating budget with a 5-year Capital Fund Budget of $57.6 million. The Director is responsible for all aspects of the Public Works & Utilities Department, including water/wastewater/reclaimed water, stormwater, engineering, streets, solid waste, facilities maintenance, utility billing, traffic and fleet services, ensuring compliance with all applicable policies, procedures, laws and regulations and the provision of quality, uninterrupted services to the Dunedin community. This role is a key strategic partner to the City Manager, Deputy City Manager, the Department Directors and the City Commission, while also serving as the City Engineer.
The successful candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, or other relevant engineering field, supplemented by a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience as a City Engineer and/or Director of Public Works & Utilities. Government leadership experience is preferred. The successful candidate must have his/her Professional Engineer designation in the State of Florida or be able to obtain this licensure within 6 months of employment. The Director must possess a valid Florida driver’s license with a good driving record or obtain one by the start of employment with the City.
A starting salary of up to $123,230 and highly competitive benefits will be offered depending upon experience and qualifications. An automobile allowance and relocation assistance will be provided.
