DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: The City of Cambridge Department of Public Works is seeking a highly motivated Senior Engineer/CA to assume a leadership role in the design and construction processes associated with public works capital improvement projects. This position will require a thoughtful experienced professional who can manage design and construction projects that are consistent with the City’s goals of fostering neighborhood vitality and a healthy urban environment. The Senior Engineer/CA will have a high degree of responsibility in successfully advancing projects in the areas of sewer separation, stormwater management, street reconstruction and public infrastructure improvements related to private development projects.
Under the supervision of the City Engineer, the Senior Engineer/CA will perform the following duties:
Communicate complex technical projects with other city departments and the general public and actively engage other City departments and the general public in design processes.Prepare design drawings and draft specifications for street, sidewalk and stormwater construction projects, consistent with the City’s complete streets approach and stormwater management goals.Manage and administer public works construction contracts including schedule, budget and quality control.Manage consulting engineering firms performing design of public works contracts and construction management services.Review, permit and oversee construction of public infrastructure performed by private entities on behalf of the City.Inspect construction, maintenance, and/or repairs by contractors of municipal infrastructure including: streets and sidewalks, public utilities, parks and related facilities.Coordinate the design and construction of public works projects with residents, property owners, business owners, other city departments, state and federal agencies and other stakeholders.Review building permit applications to insure that proposed work is compliant with DPW standard specifications, accessibility requirements, stormwater management goals and streetscape design standards.Research records related to the City’s right of way, easements and real property.Assist in emergency situations as required including, but not limited to, significant inclement weather events and participate in a 24 hour a day on call rotation.Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Architecture or related field.Minimum of 5-8 years relevant experience, with progressively increasingly levels of responsibility.Massachusetts Professional Engineer’s License is required.Driver’s license and personal vehicle to be used to and from worksite locations requiredAbility to effectively engage city staff and the community in the design and construction processes.Ability to effectively convey complex technical information to the public.Ability to make decisions in a fast paced environment.Ability to manage and administer public works construction contracts.Knowledge of state and federal regulations related to accessibility, sewer use and stormwater management.Knowledge of complete streets designs, emphasizing superior accommodation for bicyclists and pedestrians.Knowledge of engineering principles related to the design and construction of municipal improvements.Knowledge of public bidding laws.Knowledge of CAD and Geographic Information System software.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work involves frequent site visits, requiring travelling to and through active construction zones, driving, walking, bending, squatting, reaching and stretching.
