Plans, prioritizes, assigns, supervises and reviews the work of all Transit and VM Division staff. Interprets and enforces departmental rules, policies and procedures. Hires, disciplines, promotes and terminates supervised employees as necessary. Provides/coordinates training. Conducts employee evaluations and when necessary works with employees to correct any deficiencies noted. Administers, and works within the provisions of the labor agreement between the City and supervised employees. Recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and objectives and establishes schedules and methods for their implementation. Conducts meetings as necessary to coordinate goals for services. Prepares, recommends, administers, monitors and controls approved annual Transit and VM budget. Markets transit operations. Coordinates transit services with local health and service agencies. Reviews and maintains records, reports and documentation necessary for management and supervision of Transit and VM personnel, equipment and goals. Oversees activities to be in compliance with OSHA and city policies including vehicle inspection and programs to reduce maintenance costs and vehicle downtime. Ensures monitoring of city-owned underground fuel tanks meet state requirements. Oversees maintenance and operation of City’s fueling system. Selects vendors, sets and monitors their job standards and performance. Provides oversight to purchasing and inventory control of fleet related parts and equipment. Establishes, implements and maintains fleet preventive maintenance and service schedules to meet or exceed OEM standards. Monitors expenses and make recommendations on repair versus replacement. Implements and maintains cost tracking procedures. Oversees the disposal of vehicles removed from service. Regular and punctual attendance. Represents the City in a responsible, professional and trustworthy manner. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in transportation, technical, engineering or business field preferred; high school diploma required. Two years of increasingly responsible supervisory and/or administrative experience, preferably in a municipal setting plus 5 years related work experience in the repair and maintenance of light and heavy equipment. Previous shop manager and/or transit experience strongly preferred. Must live in Iowa within 10 air miles of Burlington City Limits or in Des Moines County upon employment and be able to pass a State of Iowa background investigation. Valid State of Iowa Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger and Tank Vehicle Endorsements required. Master Mechanic certification preferred.

Starting salary: Up to $57,656 DOQ with full benefit package.
