The Director of Public Works is an executive-level position that reports directly to the City Manager and has a staff of 15 professional full-time employees. The Director is responsible for the Department’s $4.87million budget, and being a contract city, the Director, along with his/her professional staff, manages a wide variety of contracts, activities, programs, projects, capital improvements, and maintenance throughout the City which includes:
Public rights of way encompassing sidewalks, streets, landscaped parkways, curbs, gutters, medians, and trails;Street and pavement management to include design, construction management, inspection, ADA compliance, median improvements, signs and striping;
Traffic engineering to include maintenance and design of traffic devices, management of the neighborhood traffic calming project, and reviewing new development plans for right of way impacts;
Maintenance of City facilities, parks, trails, open space, roadways, sidewalks, sewers and storm water drainage systems;
Water quality and flood protection to include maintenance and rehabilitation of existing collection systems and storm water quality compliance;
Sanitary sewer systems and overall management of sewer collection system assets;
Landslide administration and management to include road/land stabilization and repairs, GPS monitoring and de-watering well activity; and
Public Works administration to include public service requests, permit processing, solid waste and recycling programs, grant management, budget preparation, monitoring, purchasing and accounts payable /receivable and the CDBG Program.
To qualify, an applicant must possess a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering, public administration, or closely related field AND five years of increasingly responsible executive level experience in managing a broad range of public works programs and capital improvements in a public entity. A Master’s degree in the fields cited above and licensed engineer is highly desirable.
