Standard hours are Monday through Friday 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., however both scheduled and unscheduled overtime is required based on workload and personnel availability. In addition, required seasonal overtime due to weather conditions is mandatory (12 hour shifts).

NATURE OF WORK:

This is senior level, highly skilled work in the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel powered equipment and vehicles.  The work requires diagnosing, repairing and maintaining complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems, engine, transmission, brake, suspension and HVAC repair and maintenance, welding, and fabricating.  Employee provides guidance, training and assistance to less experienced mechanics.  Employees may be assigned tasks of similar or higher level classifications to gain experience and training in preparation for advancement.  Work is performed inside, underneath and around elevated equipment and vehicles in the Fleet Garage located in the Service Center, requiring employees to be alert to avoid accidents or personal injuries.  Safety equipment such as safety glasses, shields, gloves, earplugs, and steel-toed shoes are worn.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:

Possession of a high school diploma or GED and five years journeymen level experience in gasoline or diesel engine maintenance and repair work; or any combination of training and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

  • Class B CDL with air brakes endorsement required on date of hire is preferred, or within 6 months of hire. A valid CDL license must be acquired and maintained.
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and techniques used in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment including gasoline and diesel engines and complex mechanical, hydraulic and electrical operating systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Thorough knowledge of the safe use of oxygen-acetylene and arc welding equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair complex defects, and troubleshoot a wide variety of vehicle and equipment mechanical problems. 
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to interpret and work from CD Rom service manuals, online systems, written specifications and diagrams.
  • Ability to provide information for preparation of accurate fleet maintenance records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, other employees, and the public.
  • Ability to operate tools and equipment properly and safely.
  • Skill in the use and operations of tools and machinery used in automotive and heavy truck and construction equipment repair work and welding.
  • Ability to utilize personal computers for research and communications.
  • Ability to utilize software application to book 100% of all daily billable hours and parts utilized in repairs.
