The City of Naperville is seeking a Project Engineer to oversee development projects, capital improvement projects, and transportation projects from concept through completion.
This individual will be responsible for preparing civil engineering designs and monitoring the work of consultant engineers who prepare designs for city projects; overseeing the progress of capital improvement projects through all phases from concept to design, review, approval, permitting, construction, inspection and final close-out; reviewing engineering plans of proposed development projects for compliance with city codes and regulations and guiding developers through the design approval and construction phases of projects; overseeing transportation projects including speed studies, stop sign requests, parking restrictions and traffic calming installation; coordinating and controlling the progress of stormwater drainage projects including drainage investigations, analysis, and report and plan review, hydrology and hydraulic calculations, stormwater quality mitigation, storm drains and drainage structures design, and erosion control; and for coordinating project activities between city departments, developers, consultants, contractors, private organizations and outside agencies to expedite project completion.
The incumbent will also be developing project budgets, schedules, work and staffing plans and cost projections; developing reports on project elements such as traffic patterns and infrastructure improvements (and may present findings to committees or the City Council); meeting with developers, community representatives and the public to explain projects and activities; reviewing invoices and recommending payment; overseeing work of Inspectors, Engineering Technicians and administrative staff who support projects; operating traditional land surveying equipment to collect field data for use in project development and design; and will be continually reviewing department practices for opportunities to improve departmental effectiveness, efficiency, speed and customer service. Job duties involve frequent local travel to city facilities, and outdoors work at job sites within Naperville limits.
Minimum requirements for consideration include:
▪ A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (or a closely related field). Alternatively, those possessing an equivalent combination of formal education plus actual engineering/projects experience may be considered.
▪ One year of experience
▪ A valid State of Illinois Driver’s License and a good driving record
A State of Illinois Professional Engineer-in-Training license is preferred for this position.
This position requires a professional who will maintain a customer service focus related to the resolution of developer, community representative and public concerns. The preferred candidate will be proactive in their approach toward their work, and possess strong skills in verbal and written communication. Additionally, a focus on safety (ensuring efficient & safe utilization of equipment, personnel and operating supplies) is critical.
