Welcome to APWA’s Center for Sustainability website!
While the Center has only been in existence since early 2009, the Center’s goal is to serve as a primary resource for APWA members regarding sustainability and sustainable practices. With current economic and environmental challenges facing all of our communities, we are all learning that sustainable approaches are the best answer.
This website is designed to provide information, and links to other resources, to help Public Works leaders learn and embrace sustainability. As the website evolves you will see case studies, testimonials and other real life examples of sustainable practices from APWA member communities or other sources. We invite you to visit the site often so that you do not miss any new developments. In addition to the website, the Center also hosts the Sustainability Conference each summer (2012’s host City will be Pittsburgh), a two day program with on-site exhibits and multiple sessions focusing on sustainability in all phases of Public Works. There are also Click, Listen and Learn programs that will be of interest. The Center for Sustainability will be rolling out a video about Public Works and sustainability later this year. If there is other information that APWA members would like to see incorporated in this site, let us know.
The Center is very excited about APWA’s role as a partner with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) in the new Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI). The ISI is rolling out a tool to evaluate civil infrastructure projects relative to sustainability, similar to LEED rating for facilities and we are excited to be a part of this groundbreaking effort.
The Center for Sustainability also coordinates closely with APWA’s Chapters. The Chapters provide a critical resource for training and education of APWA members on topics related to sustainability. For many of our members, out-of-state or non-regional travel for training is unattainable. The Center hopes to work with these Chapters to make local education sessions available.
Please feel free to contact me if you have a question or need APWA’s help with sustainability. We look forward to working with you!
