New APWA staff
Emily Lovald has joined APWA in the Washington, D.C. office as the Government Affairs Assistant. She will support the Government Affairs team in creating and realizing their public policy advocacy objectives.
Emily comes to APWA from Grassroot Soccer, an innovative nonprofit focused on AIDS awareness and education in Africa, where she worked as a Development Associate. Her professional background also includes work on Capitol Hill as an intern for Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) on his Judiciary Committee and Personal Office staff, as well as experience as a Consumer Information Specialist with the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs. She plans to pursue a master's degree in Public Policy one day soon.
Emily has a B.A. in Political Science from Northeastern University in Boston, MA, where she minored in International Affairs, History and English. She was a founding member of the Northeastern University College Democrats and an active member of the Delta Zeta sorority. She has traveled throughout much of southern Asia, Africa and South America.
In her spare time Emily enjoys international travel, cooking, and exploring the city with her dog Fenway.
Courtney Thompson has recently joined the Education Department as APWA's new Education Assistant. She will be working with the Education staff in assisting to promote and facilitate Click, Listen, and Learns and Web-based training, processing CEUs from all education events, and communicating with Congress speakers to coordinate their information in preparation for Congress.
Courtney comes to APWA with a strong educational background which includes experience working with organizations such as the Administrative Teen Director for the Boys and Girls Club of America, a delegate for the National Youth Leadership Conference, a delegate for the Weed and Seed Program, an Administrative Assistant Director at TLC, and an Administrative Assistant at the National Federation of the Blind.
Originally from Caruthersville, Missouri, Courtney attended the University of Missouri-Columbia and graduated with a B.S. in Biological Sciences. Currently, she is working on obtaining a B.S. in Business at the University of Missouri-Kansas City in which she plans to further her education just as she hopes she can do for the members of APWA. In her spare time Courtney enjoys a good book, movie, or spending time with her family, especially her nephew Daniel, in Caruthersville.
