On March 1, APWA took part in the 4th Annual Middle School Design Build Competition, an event that helps middle schoolers build their skills in math, science and English. Also known as "From Crayons to CAD," more than 1,000 students from Missouri, Kansas and Washington state attended the competition, which was held at Kansas City's Union Station, just a couple of blocks from the APWA headquarters office.
A number of public agencies and private-sector companies were on hand to encourage students to understand all aspects of the construction industry. Lee Hawkins, Director of Member Relations, Dave Dancy, Director of Marketing, and Jon Dilley, Manager of Marketing and Graphic Design manned the APWA booth and spoke with students on the importance of public works services. "We have to start attracting students to the profession at the high school and middle school levels," said Hawkins. "This was the perfect opportunity to do that."
