APWA Book Review

2002 Congress speaker books big hit with APWA members!

Dynamic 2002 General Session speakers Homer Hickam, Amanda Gore and John Alston were big hits with APWA members at this year's Congress. Each of these speakers offered wonderful and amazing stories about courage, perseverance, humor, working together and celebrating life.

Each General Session speaker has a "hot-selling" book, as evidenced by the number of his or her books sold through the APWA Congress bookstore. Each book offers APWA members inspiration, wisdom, opportunities to laugh, and strategies for improving their personal and professional lives.

Homer Hickam brings two books to APWA members. His first book, Rocket Boys: A Memoir, is a powerful, luminous story of coming of age at the dawn of the 1960s, of a mother's love and a father's fears, of a group of young men who dreamed of launching rockets into outer space...and who made those dreams come true. With the grace of a natural storyteller, NASA engineer Homer Hickam paints a warm, vivid portrait of the harsh West Virginia mining town of his youth, evoking a time of innocence and promise, when anything was possible, even in a company town that swallowed its men alive. A story of romance and loss, of growing up and getting out, Homer Hickam's lush, lyrical memoir is a chronicle of triumph—at once exquisitely written and marvelously entertaining.

In his second book, We Are Not Afraid, Hickam poignantly describes Coalwood's residents' sense of purpose and drive set out by four attitudes about living that made them resilient and fearless in the face of everyday danger. The "salt of the earth" stories and advice in this book are sure to make you stand up straight, lend your neighbor a helping hand, and go forward with sure steps on the path of resilience and fortitude. By following the simple, homespun wisdom in this beautifully written book, you can discover the strength and courage inside of you to live a happy life, to love yourself and others, to trust and be trusted, and to be vigilant but never afraid.

Amanda Gore entertained APWA members, while providing them with self-motivation strategies to improve performance, relationships and the ability to think in new and creative ways. In her book, You Can Be Happy, she explores IQ—mental intelligence; EQ—emotional intelligence; and HQ—happiness intelligence! When you read this book you will laugh and enjoy yourself as you discover simple and easy ways to change the way you feel.

John Alston's book—Life is a Gift...Don't Trash It!—will help you shape a perspective about life. It is designed to stimulate your thinking and provide ideas that can help change your life for the better. In this book you will find 53 ideas that, if put into practice, can make an impact on your life. Easy to say and hard to do, but what isn't?
