APWA awards accreditation to three agencies

The latest three agencies to join the ranks of accredited agencies are Port St. Lucie, Florida-Public Works Department; Clark County, Nevada-Department of Public Works; and Contra Costa County, California-Department of Public Works and the Flood Control Agency, bringing the total to nine agencies accredited since the beginning of the program in 1996. Other accredited agencies are City of Berkeley, California-Public Works Department; Coconino County, Arizona-Public Works Department; City of Columbia, Missouri-Public Works Department; City of Coquitlam, British Columbia-Operations Department; City of Greeley, Colorado-Public Works Department; and Village of Schaumburg, Illinois-Public Works Department.

The accreditation program consists of an intensive self assessment of the agencies' policies, practices and procedures, combined with an on-site evaluation. The process, which takes an average of 24 to 36 months, compares the recommended practices in APWA's Public Works Management Practices Manual against the actual practices implemented by the agency.

The three most recent agencies to be accredited, together with Berkeley, Columbia, and Coconino County, will be recognized at the awards ceremony at APWA's annual Congress in Philadelphia. These six agencies have become accredited since the last Congress.
