In 1900, Congress granted the American Red Cross (ARC) its charter, charging the volunteer organization with providing services to members of military as well as delivering assistance to disaster victims. The ARC web site provides information on domestic and international disaster recovery efforts and provides topical emergency and safety preparedness information.

The Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS), founded by the former Deputy Director of FEMA, Harvey G. Ryland, is an effort by the insurance industry to reduce the loss of life and property damages caused by natural disasters. IBHS sponsors the Showcase Community Program, the predecessor to FEMA's Project Impact, and is a member of Public-Private Partnerships 2000, a collaborative effort of the Subcommittee on Natural Disaster Reduction.

Asbestos.com provides the most up-to-date information to our visitors in the hopes of spreading awareness about mesothelioma cancer, asbestos exposure, and mesothelioma survival rate. Asbestos has been used in many different occupations, including shipyard workers, automobile manufacturing production, railroad workers, and many more. Many individuals who worked in these occupations have experienced health problems because of their exposure to asbestos.

The Natural Hazards Center at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado, USA, is a national and international clearinghouse for information on natural hazards and human adjustments to hazards and disasters. The Natural Hazards Center web site allows visitors to download periodicals and publications on all aspects of emergency management, disaster mitigation and recovery. Links are provided to educational institutions offering programs from certification through advanced degrees. Information is also provided on upcoming conferences, workshops and training sessions.
Public Works and the Current Avian Influenza Threat

Prior to an Avian Influenza, Public Works Managers need to train employees on proper handling techniques to ensure their safety. In this PowerPoint, Chris Walsh, Director of Operations for the City of Beloit, Wisconsin, uses chocolate syrup to simulate influenza virus and all staff practice with gloves and syrup. The videos were passed on to his office from ODOT and have been used for two years now training county and township drivers in Southwest Ohio.
