Education and Training
The Canadian School of Public Services offers a number of on site and online courses which may be of interes to public works professionals. A number of on-line courses are free of charge.
FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute (EMI), in Emmitsburg, Maryland, offers training on topics related to floodplain management, mitigation, and construction, including the basic CRS course (E278). These are oriented to local building, zoning, planning, and engineering officials. Tuition is free for state and local government officials, travel stipends are available, and on-campus lodging is free. Free transportation is provided from the airport to the campus and back to the airport. The only out-of-pocket expense is a meal ticket—all-you-can-eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
In line with APWA's Mission to promote professional excellence, understanding of and competency and credibility in public works, APWA is pleased to offer information on graduate studies opportunities designed specifically for public works professionals. The University of Nebraska-Omaha and Norwich University both offer online MPA programs with Concentrations in Public Works.

All of these web sites offer training and information for small and rural communities.
