The City of Champaign is accepting applications for a City Engineer in the Public Works Department. The employee in this position will manage the work of the Engineering Division including design and construction of public works projects. The work involves planning, managing, and monitoring work of others to achieve established goals. The employee will be a member of the Public Works Department management team and will assist the Director in planning projects, setting goals, evaluating work and effectiveness, and communicating with City Council, staff, and citizens.
The position requires at least ten years of experience working as a civil engineer. At least five years of experience in a management position (managing the work of multiple work units or teams) is preferred. A bachelor's degree in civil engineering from a college or university accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) or acceptable education for registration in the State of Illinois is required. An advanced degree in business or public administration is preferred.
Excellent communication skills and problem solving ability are required. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff, elected officials, other government agencies, contractors, and consultants. Experience managing the work of multiple work units, preparing budgets and managing expenditures, managing the services of consulting engineers and contractors is preferred.
Additionally, candidates must possess a valid driver's license issued by the State of Illinois within 30 days of beginning work and have a good driving record.
The starting salary will be between $94,706 and $107,814, depending on qualifications, with generous benefits. Applications must be received online no later than Sunday, June 1, 2014.
