Under general direction, the Solid Waste Superintendent plans, organizes and directs the City’s Solid Waste Division's operations.  The Solid Waste Superintendent is responsible for the management of the Lompoc Landfill; the solid waste collection system, including the various recycling operations; the household hazardous waste facility; street sweeping; and solid waste code enforcement.

EDUCATION /EXPERIENCE:    College course work in management, engineering, or environmental studies or related field AND three years (3) of administrative or supervisory experience in solid waste operations.

LICENSE: Possession of a valid and appropriate California drivers' license.

KNOWLEDGE OF: Landfill and solid waste operations; applicable laws, codes and regulations pertaining to the landfill operations and the collection of solid waste, including hazardous materials; budget development and maintenance; record keeping; proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in landfill operations and solid waste collection; general principles of management, supervision and training; appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

ABILITY TO: Plan, schedule and administer comprehensive work programs; Estimate costs and develop and implement a budget; Direct the operations of the landfill, solid waste collection and work of supervisors; Achieve a maximized cost effective solid waste program; Read and interpret engineering plans and specifications; Prepare detailed and accurate reports; Read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at the level required for successful job performance; Communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

EXAMINATION PROCESS: Based upon screening of the City application, résumé, AND responses to supplemental questions  applicants whose qualifications best meet the requirements of the position will be invited to the examination process. May include, but is not limited to, written exam and/or panel interview. Those candidates who pass the examination process will be placed on an eligibility list from which the final selection will be made.

SELECTION PROCESS: As authorized by City policy, applicants being considered for hire in this position are subject to fingerprinting for purposes of investigating criminal history background, as part of the employment screening process. Appointment is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment medical exam (based upon job-related physical standards) by a City-designated physician.

Failure in any one part of the examination or selection processes will disqualify a candidate from further consideration.
