The City of South Gate, California is located just 12 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles, encompassing 7.5 square miles, and is the 16th-largest city in Los Angeles County.
South Gate is seeking a forward-thinking Public Works Director who possesses strong leadership skills and can inspire the Public Works team to do its best. The Director reports to the City Manager and is responsible for the overall coordination and direction of the public works processes in the City of South Gate, comprising the management and development of public facilities and infrastructure operations including water, sewer, refuse, traffic, streets, street sweeping and public health and safety services. This position also serves as liaison to federal, state, regional, county, city, and special district agencies on public works related matters. The Department is comprised of 63 employees spread across five divisions: Engineering, Electrical/General Maintenance/Graffiti, Street Maintenance/Sewer, Water and Fleet Maintenance. For FY 2013/2014, the Department’s operating budget (including utilities) is $ 39.8 million, with a CIP program budget of $8 million.
The ideal candidate will be an open-minded problem solver who communicates well and values the input of others. The chosen candidate will be a solid manager who can provide clear direction and foster a team environment in which individuals are motivated to perform at their highest level. The Public Works Director must be a team player that will work well with other members of the Executive Team and have the ability to insure responsive service delivery and implementation of Council and City Manager direction. An engineering background is not required, but it is desirable. Candidates for this position must possess the equivalent of five years of responsible supervisory experience managing large-scale public programs and projects, as well as a Bachelor’s Degree. A Master’s Degree in Public Administration or Engineering is desirable and may substitute for one (1) year of required experience. Experience with federal, state and regional public works grants requirements and administration of special assessment districts is highly desirable. Possession of or ability to obtain a California Class C driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record is required. Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer in the State of California is not required.
The salary range for this position is open and dependent upon qualifications; the top of the current range is $153,048 annually The City of South Gate offers an attractive benefits package: 2.7 @ 55 PERS; Deferred Compensation match; Auto Allowance - $475 monthly; Life Insurance - $100,000; Medical and Dental Insurance; Vacation Leave - 160 hours annually; Sick Leave - 120 hours annually; Administrative Leave - 80 hours annually. South Gate also offers a 4/10 workweek and a holiday week off between Christmas and New Year’s Day, in addition to other holidays observed throughout the year by the City.
