Job Summary

This position performs a variety of routine and complex construction inspection activities for Commercial, Private Development, and Private Utility projects. Interprets and enforces compliance with Federal, State and Local Codes and Standards, traffic management and proactively problem solves changes in the field. Work hours will be from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday (work hours may change to accommodate work activity).


Inspect commercial, private developer and franchise utility projects for compliance with approved plans, specifications, and contract agreements as well as Federal, State and City standards.Attend preconstruction and construction phase meetings to explain inspection standards and problems.Prepare daily field reports and written correspondence.Consult with contractors and developers in resolving construction conflicts.Work closely with departments, engineers and planning staff to ensure system integrity.


Graduation from an accredited two year college or university or an equivalent combination of experience and school.


Five or more years road transportation, construction or equivalent inspection experience, and two years college level course work or an equivalent combination of experience and school.Knowledge of construction methods, materials and contractor practices in the following areas: structural walls, reinforced concrete, asphalt, storm, sewer, water, earthwork, concrete flatwork, landscaping, irrigation, construction scheduling and work sequencing, signalization, illumination and channelization.Current, valid Washington State Driver’s License and a good driving record, and the ability to maintain a good driving record in accordance with City standards.Knowledge of safety procedures, traffic control and safety, and the ability to obtain a certification with the designation of a Traffic Control Supervisor.Excellent verbal and written communication skills.Ability to make and defend unpopular decisions and to know when to request assistance.Analytical and detail-oriented skills.Problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and confined areas.Ability to work overtime with minimal advance notice.Knowledge and ability to resolve construction conflicts in the field.Ability to work with other City staff, general contractors and the general public.Both private and public sector experience is preferred.

This is a full-time, non-union, non-exempt position.
