The Town of Mansfield, Connecticut is seeking an innovative, dynamic, experienced public works and civil engineering professional to lead its Public Works Department. The Director/Town Engineer has oversight and responsibility for operations (roads, grounds, solid waste/recycling, equipment/fleet maintenance) and engineering. The Public Works Director/Town Engineer is responsible for: visioning and planning activities; coordinating the day-to-day operations of the Public Works Department; budgeting and grant administration; capital projects administration; professional engineering work; developing, implementing, and evaluating departmental services; and developing and administering departmental policies and procedures. The Director is also responsible for coaching, supervising and evaluating departmental personnel. The Public Works Director/Town Engineer reports to the Town Manager and provides staff support to a number of citizen advisory committees.

Mansfield’s current Public Works Director/Town Engineer is retiring after 35 years of dedicated service to the community. The selected candidate should begin work by December 2, 2013, with a transition and orientation period of 1 ½ weeks with the current Director. The salary range is $88,234-$123,560/yr with a competitive benefits package. The hiring rate of pay will depend upon the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience.

A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field supplemented by professional engineer certification and considerable supervisory experience are required. Extensive municipal experience and a master’s degree are highly desirable. The Town will look to the selected candidate to build on the Department's strengths while providing vision and leadership to ensure that the Department continues to meet the needs of the community. The selected candidate will be expected to maintain our tradition of excellent public service.

Work Hours and Schedule
The selected candidate should begin work by December 2, 2013. This is a full-time position. The normal work schedule is 35 hours per week, Monday – Wednesday 8:15am-4:30pm, Thursday 8:15am-6:30pm, and Friday 8am-noon. The selected candidate will staff and attend numerous Town Council and advisory committee meetings, some of which occur in the evenings. This is an exempt position eligible to earn compensatory time for hours worked in excess of 40 per week.
