Engineering Technician - City of Redmond (Job # 13-0062)

Under the direction of the Development Engineering Manager, this position coordinates review of new record drawing submittals and maintains citywide record drawing system. Coordinates tracking of private development construction drawings under review; ensures proper review fees are paid and bonds posted; subsequent asset summaries submitted; handles release of bonds. Reviews and interprets engineering documents, construction drawings, legal descriptions, and easement documents. Calculates transportation impact fees for building permits. Prepares and updates maps, drawings, spreadsheets, data files and documentation. Provides map-based and other technical information and responds to inquiries from staff, citizens, private developers, contractors, engineers and other agencies. Customer services responsibilities include responding to customers, including over the counter coverage, phone calls and emails. Performs other duties as assigned.
Hours and Duration:
This position is a full-time, limited duration status position with benefits. The duration of employment will be approximately two (2) years, working 40 hours per week scheduled Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
The City of Redmond will also be creating an eligibility list from this pool of applicants for future openings.
Knowledge of: AutoCAD and GIS (ARC GIS) operating principles and characteristics; engineering design and drafting; special analysis processes; water and sewer system construction terms and symbols; word processing, spreadsheet and database software; engineering computations; surveying; construction terms and methods; and principles and operating procedures of computer systems and related equipment.
Skill in: using CAD; creating construction drawings and maps working from available records, survey data and engineering notes; coding and digitizing maps and geographical features into various layers with GIS; and performing quality control checks to ensure integrity of the database.
Ability to: interpret and plot survey data, plans and profiles, photographs, maps, and legal descriptions; develop and maintain data layers using GIS tools, CAD tools and databases; perform CAD functions and follow meticulous methodology; communicate verbally and in writing; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and citizens.
Education and Experience:
College level course work or graduation from an accredited two-year college or university with a degree in drafting, engineering sciences or related field. Four (4) years experience in an engineering technician related field or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Licenses and Requirements:
Valid Washington State driver's license by date of hire, and a driving record that meets City standards.
Work is primarily performed in an office environment. Physical hazard may occur from exposure to traffic or field terrain while reviewing field sites.
Fulfillment of bargaining unit membership is required within 30 days of hire.
