Under the supervision of the Sewer Maintenance Manager, performs specialized, highly skilled work and coordinates the activities of work crews in support of policies, goals and objectives established by department management.
Training and Experience
Associate degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school and four years progressively responsible experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of sewer collection systems and lift stations; or equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of acceptable practices and standards of the methods, materials, techniques and tools used in the installation, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of sewer collection systems and lift stations; of hydraulic flow data collection practices, GIS sewer collection system mapping and data management practices; of the laws and regulations that impact the work performed and supervised.
Advanced skill in performing sewer collection system and lift station maintenance. Skill in public, employee and labor relations and in maintaining effective working relationships; in using personal computers and software applications, including GIS, GPS, CCTV, PLC, spreadsheet, and database applications; in safe and proper operation of vacuum/jetter trucks, end loaders, and CCTV equipment; in reading and interpreting plans, blueprints, shop drawings and schematics; in using hand tools and power tools; in using electrical and electronic diagnostic equipment and pump control troubleshooting and repair.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents such as policies, regulations, instructions, procedure manuals, diagrams, schedules and labor agreements; to respond effectively to inquiries or complaints; to write reports, business correspondence and work procedures; to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, elected officials, employees and the general public; to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Licenses, Registrations and Certifications
Valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-B) with tanker and air brakes endorsements, or equivalent, within 45 days of hire.
Valid Illinois Collection System Operator Certificate within six (6) months of hire.

The employee will frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and rarely lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock and hazardous atmospheres. Work is performed under varied weather conditions in some extremely disagreeable conditions.
The current Residency Policy states that AFSCME employees shall live within a 20-mile radius from 1630 8th Avenue in Moline, within 180 days of hire.
