The City of Plano, Texas, is seeking a new City Engineer. Plano is a community of over 261,000 residents located 20 miles north of Downtown Dallas along US Highway 75. Plano has a reputation as a “World Class” city and has repeatedly received national accreditations and recognitions.
Plano is a home rule city operating under the Council-Manager form of government. The City has a budgeted, full-time staff of 2,050, and 717 part-time and seasonal employees; Plano’s total combined budget for FY 2012-13 is over $424 million.
The City of Plano Engineering Department, accredited by the American Public Works Association, oversees construction of all private development projects and implements the Community Investment Program (CIP), consisting of the design, construction, and inspection of public works infrastructure including, water, sewer, streets, alleys and drainage facilities. The Department prepares bidding documents and contracts for their own CIP projects as well as those of the Parks & Recreation and Public Works Departments.
The department manages the City’s traffic and transportation system that focuses on long range planning and public transportation development. Additional responsibilities include construction zone and residential traffic safety, elementary school walking route safety, traffic congestion, and traffic signal operation. The department is also responsible for design, construction, operations, and maintenance, including custodial services, of most city-owned buildings.
There are 62 full-time employees in the Engineering Department. The combined department operating budget for FY 2013 is over $11.5 million.
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering and seven or more years of experience as a professional engineer required. Five or more years of progressively responsible supervisory experience, preferably in a municipal government setting of comparable size is desired. Must have Registered PE credentials, and if those credentials are not from the State of Texas, they must be transferred to Texas within 1 year of hire. State of Texas registration as a Public Surveyor is preferred.
