THE TOWN OF SNOWMASS VILLAGE, COLORADO IS LOOKING FOR QUALIFIED INDIVIDUALS INTERESTED IN A FULL-TIME YEAR ROUND POSITION AS THE PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR
Position: Public Works Director
Status: Full-time year round, paid as salaried/exempt with medical, dental, vision, life, retirement, and recreation benefit.
About Snowmass Village: Snowmass Village is located 9 miles from Aspen, Colorado. Snowmass Village has a world premier ski mountain within the community and is surrounded by national wilderness areas and forest system lands. There is an extensive trail system within and around the community along with a variety of recreational and cultural amenities to enjoy within the Roaring Fork valley. Snowmass Village is also experiencing a renewed renaissance after the recession as a new commercial village again moves forward.
Description of Work: Under the general supervision of the Town Manager, performs management and professional work in directing and aligning the activities of the Public Works Department; which involves responsibility for planning, organizing, staffing, and directing the activities of several divisions, including engineering, road maintenance, solid waste/recycling, facility maintenance, and vehicle maintenance. This position also involves managing complex projects such as new intersections, pedestrian improvements, and how to plan the entryway of the Town. The Public Works Director is part of the executive team within the Town and also supports strategic actions within the Town.
Strong leadership and communication skillsDevelops alignment, common vision, and a strong sense of team within the departments, as well as ability to understand operational functions and needs within each division.Review plans, technical engineering reports, budget estimates, and proposed ordinances and regulations submitted by subordinates.Lead and manage complex capital projects. This includes coordinating capital projects with other Town departments, contractors, and local utility companies.Reviews and advises on development plans and permits for work in Town rights-of-way.Ability to develop strong rapport and working relationships with employees, other governmental stakeholders, and the community as a whole.Inspire and support team members in their profession development.Presents reports to the Town Council; reviews personnel performance; represents the department in Contract negotiations.Prepares and administers annual operating budget; administers and manages the Road Mill Levy Fund and the Public Works Department Capital Reserve Fund.
Experience and Training:
Any combination of experience and training equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, or a related field, and a minimum of five years of responsible, professional experience in the public works field or related fields, including five years in a supervisory capacity; a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering is desirable. Hands on experience with road maintenance, fleet maintenance, heavy equipment experience, facility maintenance, and/or solid waste management are also desirable. Experience in mountain communities desirable.
