Community Development Director
The City of Half Moon Bay, California (pop. 11,000), is a rural seaside community nestled between the dramatic green Santa Cruz Mountains and the powerful Pacific Ocean approximately 30 miles south of San Francisco. The City of Half Moon Bay is a contract city where the majority of services are provided through contracts and shared services agreements. The City seeks candidates to fill the newly-created position of Community Development Director to manage the City’s activities associated with planning, building, code enforcement, inspection, public works maintenance, and engineering functions. The Director will supervise contract personnel and provide guidance to City employees and contractors regarding community development activities. Department resources include an operating budget of $1.3 million with an annual CIP budget of $6 million.
The ideal candidate is an experienced, creative, and service-oriented development professional who has broad experience in local government development and public works services. Candidates with the demonstrated ability to coalesce the various community development functions into a highly-functioning, productive and collaborative team will be favorably considered. Successful candidates will be skilled negotiators with the ability to work effectively in a community with complex regulatory requirements and nuances. While a technical background in development services is expected, strong management and leadership skills are of the utmost importance. At least five years of progressively responsible relevant local government experience and a Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree, professional engineer or AICP certification desirable.
