A welcome message from Brad Underwood, Facilities & Grounds Technical Committee Chair, 2012-2013

Welcome to the APWA Facilities and Grounds web page. The committee serves as a central connection to the Public Works family on these topical areas. It is the Committee’s primary purpose to share experiences, knowledge and expertise in these areas through publication articles, Click Listen and Learn sessions and live presentations at Congress, Snow Conference, and Sustainability Conference. We don’t do this alone it takes the full membership of APWA to make our committee successful so that means you! Feel free to contact any committee member or our staff liaison to share information or participate.

The committee is made up of six professionals with expertise in Facilities, Grounds or both. This year we welcome several new members:  Yvonne Douglas of Atlanta, Georgia; Joseph Payne of Springfield, Missouri; and Debbie Sullivan of Olympia, Washington. The committee is well represented in all aspects of expertise as well as varying locales throughout the United States.

A huge accomplishment from last year was the release at Congress of the “Tree Protection and Preservation Pocket Guide”, thanks to the efforts of Jennifer Gulick and the leadership of then Committee Chair Walter Veselka. This year we plan on:  reaching out to Chapters to learn how we can better serve them and let members know how they can contribute to the efforts of the committee; collaborating with the other technical committees where possible on topics of joint interest; participating in the Snow Conference and Sustainability Conference; and moving forward with professional development paths on Facilities and Grounds within the Donald C. Stone Center.

I view the content of the Facilities and Grounds Committee to be broad reaching and therefore, I again encourage your involvement to share your expertise or experience with the APWA family.
