Snow professionals heading to Peoria
Plans are set for Snow Conference
The North American Snow Conference, the premier event for snow and ice management, will take place April 30 - May 3 at the Peoria Civic Center in Peoria, Illinois. Hosted by APWA's Illinois Chapter, the conference will bring together more than 1,000 participants to learn about the latest innovations, successful practices, and strategies in winter operations and snowfighting techniques.
Host City: Peoria, Illinois
The City of Peoria sits on the shores of the Illinois River in the heart of Illinois, midway between Chicago and St. Louis. The greater Peoria metropolitan area has a population of about 350,000, with more than one million people living within a 60-mile radius. Peoria is the home of Bradley University and the University of Illinois' College of Medicine, as well as three prominent medical research hospitals.
There's a wide variety of restaurants and a thriving nightlife in the Downtown and Riverfront areas, plus you'll find charming shops and coffee houses, art galleries and micro breweries—all located within walking distance of the official Snow Conference hotels. Combining "big city assets" with a "smaller town lifestyle," Peoria is a very attractive destination for the Snow Conference!
The Snow Conference exhibits, education sessions, and onsite registration will be located at the Peoria Civic Center. Special APWA room rates are available at the official Snow Conference hotels—the Hotel Pere Marquette and the Holiday Inn City Centre, both located within walking distance of the Civic Center.
For more information about Peoria, visit the Peoria Area Convention & Visitors Bureau website at www.peoria.org.
Heavy equipment, like these plows, will be on display at this year's conference.
The Snow Conference show floor just keeps getting better! For the first time, Snow Conference exhibitors will be displaying heavy equipment and motorized vehicles. Come slam some doors, kick some tires, and see the latest and greatest in winter maintenance products and equipment from the more than 100 participating companies.
The Snow Conference education program includes great keynote speakers and the always-popular Snow Conference Talk Show, as well as more than 30 concurrent education sessions and roundtables. New this year is the "Change Track"—a coordinated set of presentations designed to address the barriers to change that every organization faces and show you how to overcome them.
Technical tours are always informative and exciting. Here, Bret Hodne conducts the anti-icing demonstration at the 2005 Snow Conference.
The morning of Wednesday, May 3, is dedicated entirely to the technical tour program. There is no additional cost, but space is limited so be sure to check the appropriate box on your registration form if you plan to participate.
Tour 1: Caterpillar Tractor Assembly and Mapleton Foundry. This technical tour includes two Caterpillar facilities—the Mapleton Foundry and Building SS, a track-type tractor assembly plant in East Peoria. You will visit a modern, electric melting, gray iron foundry with the latest technologies in process systems for melting, core making, molding and finishing. This operation ensures top quality castings for all Caterpillar engines. You will also tour one of the most efficient and technologically advanced assembly plants in the world, where you can view the complete assembly—pbeginning with case and frames, to the finished product—of D6, D7, D8, D9, D10 and D11 track-type tractors and 572, 583 and 589 pipelayers.
Tour 2: Public Works Operation Centers. This tour includes the operation centers for the City of Peoria and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). First, at the City of Peoria's Lester D. Bergsten Operation and Maintenance Facility, you'll see fleet services, traffic, streets/sewers maintenance operations, and facilities operations. Also on the tour is the City of Peoria's snow and ice fighting equipment supported by a 12,000-ton salt storage dome with conveyor loading system and Liquid Calcium Chloride storage and dispensing systems. The second stop will be at the IDOT District 4 Peoria West Service Center for a demonstration of their salt brine production and storage system, and an opportunity to see IDOT's snow fighting equipment.
There's plenty of exciting social activities, too. The Illinois Chapter of APWA will welcome you to Peoria and the Snow Conference with an opening reception on the exhibit floor on Sunday afternoon. Monday evening a special optional event is offered—a night out at the Ballpark to see the Peoria Chiefs take on the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays. And the Tuesday evening dinner is sponsored this year by Caterpillar Inc. and will be held at Caterpillar's worldwide training and demonstration facility. There's always plenty of networking and socializing opportunities at the Snow Conference!
