New APWA staff
Julia Anastasio has joined the Government Affairs teams as Senior Government Affairs Manager. She will focus on water and solid waste issues for APWA's membership. Julia joins APWA from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection where she worked in the Secretary's Policy Office as an Executive Policy Specialist. In this role, her primary focus was on ensuring that the agency implemented the Administration's priorities as they relate to water and land use issues. Before joining PADEP, she spent time working on several political campaigns in Pennsylvania. Julia began her career as a regulatory attorney with the U.S. Department of Commerce here in Washington, D.C.
Julia has a J.D. from the Washington College of Law, American University; a Masters in the Study of Environmental Law (MSEL) from Vermont Law School; and a B.A. in government from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA. Outside of work, Julia spends her time cooking, traveling and spending her time with family and friends.
Andrea Harts recently joined the APWA staff as a part-time Member Marketing Assistant. Her primary duties will involve providing assistance to the membership and marketing teams, and being available to any member who may have questions regarding their membership with APWA.
Andrea brings significant membership, marketing, and customer service experience to APWA. Most recently she served as Marketing Assistant for a national beverage company in Scottsdale, Arizona. And before that, she was the Membership Coordinator for a large builders association in Phoenix, Arizona.
Andrea's husband was transferred to Kansas City last year. They moved here with their daughter, Anna, and dog, Naudia. They have since then added a second daughter to the family, little Caitlin. Working with APWA is the perfect opportunity for Andrea; it gives her much-needed time away from the girls, but not too much time!
Daniel Jensen has recently joined the Government Affairs team to manage APWA's homeland security and emergency management programs as well as promote the association's public policy advocacy priorities before internal and external audiences.
Daniel comes to APWA with a strong political background which includes expertise and experience in telecommunications, transportation, homeland security, science and technology. Most recently, he worked as a lobbyist for Alcalde & Fay, a large Washington, D.C.-area lobbying firm where he represented a wide variety of clients and their issues before Congress.
Daniel's background in Washington includes five years as a staff member to Rep. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon (R-CA), before leaving to work for the American Traffic Safety Association as their Washington Government Relations Representative and lobbyist. There he participated in formulating the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) reauthorization.
An alumnus of George Mason University, Daniel served as Executive Director of the GMU Republicans, and has also served in many other organizations—educational, religious and political. He enjoys writing, politics and as a San Diego native—surfing.
Pam Potthast has joined the APWA staff as the Accounts Payable Specialist. Prior to joining APWA, she worked at EBM in Norfolk, Nebraska, and at American Crane in Kansas City, Kansas, where she also worked in Accounts Payable. Pam brings more than 10 years of experience to APWA. She has an associate's degree from Northeast Community College in Norfolk.
Pam is originally from Norfolk and moved to Kansas City last year with her husband, Tom, and youngest daughter, Taylor, after Tom was transferred the area. Their children are Nikki, a manager at HyVee in Lincoln, Nebraska (who was married Oct. 15); Craig, who is in the Navy and is stationed at Charleston, South Carolina; Jaime, who is a senior at the University of Nebraska in Omaha; and Taylor, who is an eighth-grader at South Valley Middle School in Liberty, Missouri. Pam, Tom and Taylor live in Liberty and enjoy biking and walking.
Becky Wickstrom has joined the Washington office as Media Affairs Manager. She will be working with Government Affairs staff to promote the association's public policy advocacy priorities while increasing media exposure for APWA programs and members.
Becky relocated from Utah where she was Director of Public Relations for the Provo-Orem Chamber of Commerce. In addition to producing collateral materials, developing advertising opportunities and handling media affairs, Becky worked with state and local officials to promote legislation and policies beneficial to the organization. Prior to her position with the Chamber of Commerce, Becky worked in the marketing department of Utah Valley State College, one of the fastest growing four-year colleges in the nation, authoring press releases, conducting interviews with key institution leaders, donors and alumni, and creating copy for publications.
Becky has authored several articles as a freelance writer and participated in a college advisory board for creation of a four-year communications degree. She has a B.A. in Communications from Brigham Young University in Utah. Becky enjoys painting, cooking, yoga, outdoor activities, shopping, singing and decorating.
