Introducing the new, improved Emerging Public Works Leaders Forum

Ann Daniels
Professional Development Program Manager

APWA is pleased to announce the newly updated, third annual Emerging Public Works Leaders Forum beginning on Sunday, September 22, and incorporating events and sessions throughout Congress. The program is designed to bring public works employees, with less than five years supervisory experience in the field, attending their first Congress, together with experienced public works employees to encourage the development of mentor/coach-mentoree relationship and offer training in networking, career development, and getting the most benefit from Congress.

A maximum of 50 participants, who meet the criteria outlined above, and who have not attended Congress before, will be accepted to participate in this program. Selection will be made on a first-come, first-served basis according to the date the completed application form is received at APWA headquarters.

APWA membership is not required, but the Emerging Leader candidates must not have previously attended a Congress.

Plans for this year's Forum include activities scheduled throughout the entire week, with a special emphasis on Sunday with attendance at the First Timers Meeting, attending the General Session together, participating in the Opening Entourage to the Exhibit Hall and afternoon sessions on Networking and Career Development, and concludes with the Get Acquainted Party. Monday will include meeting for lunch on the exhibit floor and an exciting scavenger hunt, followed by attending the Awards Ceremony. On Tuesday, an informal lunch on the exhibit floor followed by a roundtable discussion will be held. The events will conclude with attendance at the Banquet on Wednesday night.

Special events and recognitions will be held throughout the week, as well.

A special rate of $195 will be extended to all approved Emerging Leader participants. This registration fee will include the program and events scheduled throughout the week, as well as Congress registration, including a Banquet ticket for Wednesday night. This is a great offer since the registration to Congress alone is $440.

Experienced public works employees are encouraged to apply for this program as a mentor/coach and to help build lasting relationships and a bright future for new public works emerging leaders. All approved mentor/coaches must register and pay the normal registration fees to attend Congress and will receive special recognition from APWA.

All applications must be received by APWA by June 28, 2002.

(This program is not intended to be a traditional mentoring program, nor is it a chapter leadership development course. The program provides a limited mentor/coach-mentoree relationship during the International Public Works Congress and Exposition. This enhanced networking opportunity is designed to help individuals understand the complex world of public works.)
