The 2014 Public Works Stormwater Summit has so much to offer, we are holding it over two afternoons – a total of six hours of up-to-the-minute and must-know information! APWA’s Water Resources Management Committee has planned a program that features the latest approaches for stormwater planning and management in North America.

DAY ONE:

Monday, August 18, 2014, 2–5 p.m.

Stormwater Resiliency for Public Works

Volatile and changing weather patterns have increasingly turned the focus of public works professionals to renewing and strengthening infrastructure to a level of resiliency that will allow quicker recovery times, using sustainable and green infrastructure tactics. Day One of the summit will feature case studies about creating resilient and sustainable infrastructure and systems:

  • The 2013 flooding events in the Denver, Colorado, area tested the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District’s drainageway infrastructure. Examine how their two-pronged approach of good floodplain management and fixing existing infrastructure made the flood effects far less devastating.

  • The City of Welland, Ontario, completed a study in 2013 to evaluate the resiliency of its stormwater, combined sewer and municipal wastewater treatment systems. This assessment is allowing them to better manage infrastructure risk and to plan and design future systems.

  • The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) is pushing scientific envelopes to position the region to achieve resilient, adaptable infrastructure systems that manage fast paced growth along with the uncertainties of climate change.

DAY TWO:

Tuesday, August 19, 2014, 2–5 p.m.

Sustainable Stormwater Management

Day Two of the summit will focus on sustainable stormwater management strategies and best practices. These presentations will offer practical tools and approaches that will help you with your agency’s stormwater management responsibilities and obligations.

  • Review a demonstration of the Business Case Evaluator (BCE) economic companion tool to the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure’s EnvisionTM Sustainable Infrastructure Rating System. See how it will help you prioritize capital spending for the greatest economic, environmental, and social returns.

  • Discover how the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) approaches floodplain management. Check out their strategies to see which would adapt to your region.

  • Examine the benefits of Green Infrastructure (GI) designs to address community needs, long-term visions for the watershed, and the ability to meet CSO consent decree requirements.
     

 

Public Works Directors’ Roundtable

How many times have you attended a conference and wished that the issues that are at the forefront of your mind right now—this very minute—could be explored in collaboration by experts in the public works profession. Well, here’s your opportunity to tackle the tough issues with public works leaders from across North America. Come prepared to describe your issues and challenges and share your insights, innovations, and solutions. The top minds in public works (including you) will be there. Together, we’ll move the profession forward. 

 


Envision™ Roundtable

Sunday, August 17, 3–4:50 p.m. 

Cities of the future must employ a means to measure and ensure that public works and infrastructure projects contribute to the overall sustainability of the communities that they serve. Envision is the product of a joint collaboration between the Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI). Likened to LEED certification for vertical construction, Envision was designed to fill a gap and specifically focus on the sustainability of civil infrastructure. It covers roads, bridges, pipelines, airports, dams, levees, landfills, water and wastewater treatment systems and other infrastructure that makes up the built environment. Don’t miss this opportunity to network with Envision users and discuss the potential applications and uses for this infrastructure sustainability rating system.

Self Assessment Using the Public Works Practices Manual—A Tool for Improving Operations and Management


(Separate fee required: $339 USD* member/ $395.50 USD* nonmember. Fees include instruction, materials, and breaks. Lunch is on your own.)

Are your operational performance and productivity levels as high as you want them to be? This workshop is designed to help you examine and evaluate your agency's current management policies and procedures. You'll learn how to target problem areas, identify opportunities, and improve the overall effectiveness of all your public works operations. If you are already using the Management Practices Manual to prepare for APWA accreditation, the new format will give you hands-on training. This workshop is designed for public works directors, managers, supervisors, and accreditation managers, as well as municipal administrators performing public works functions.

Climate Risk Assessment for Adaptation Planning and Implementation Workshop

(Classroom Workshop - no limit on attendance, do not need to sign up in advance.)
This workshop is a must-attend for public works professionals who must consider current and future climate trends when planning for, designing, managing, maintaining, and operating public infrastructure systems and facilities. You will review Canada’s Public Infrastructure Engineering Vulnerability Committee (PIEVC) Protocol for assessing risk and vulnerability to climate change.
 

Walking … Stepping Into the Transportation Mix

(Combination Classroom Workshop and Walking Tour. No attendance limit on the classroom portion of this workshop. HOWEVER, space is limited for the walking portion of this workshop so you MUST sign up for it in advance.

We are all walkers! Walking is the first thing a child wants to do and the last thing an older person wants to give up.  Yet, as a form of transportation it has been neglected and virtually engineered out of our lives in favor of faster, more technologically focused forms of transportation. The benefits of walkable environments include healthy people and economies, reductions in traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions, and more sustainable communities.  The first portion of this workshop will introduce the WALK Friendly Ontario designation, a program that recognizes municipalities that are working to improve the conditions for walking, and discuss the criteria for designing and building a walk-friendly community. The second part will be an outdoor walkability audit in downtown Toronto to illustrate some of the key features of walk-friendly environments.

CEU Credits

.1 CEU = 1 PDH (Professional Development Hour)

The Professional Development Hour (PDH) is a term established by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) “Continuing Professional Competency Guidelines” for Professional Engineers (PE). In these guidelines, NCEES defines the equivalency between CEUs and PDHs as: 0.1 CEU (1 hour of instruction) = 1 PDH. (Important note to Florida and New York Professional Engineers: APWA is an approved Florida Board of Professional Engineers provider of Continuing Education. The State of New York recognizes APWA as an approved training provider by virtue of APWA’s standing as an IACET Authorized Provider of CEUs.)

APWA’s education sessions and exhibit showcase presentations are eligible for CEU credit. Your registration covers the processing fee. APWA is an International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) Authorized Provider of CEUs. 

The Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is a nationally accepted measure of participation in continuing education activities. It is a valuable tool for showing employers and professional licensing authorities that you are adding new skills and staying current with today’s ever-changing workplace. APWA is an International Association for Continuing Education & Training (IACET) Authorized Provider of CEUs. This designation demonstrates that APWA’s Continuing Education programs comply with recognized standards for program development and learning outcomes and are recognized by multiple state licensing boards and certifying bodies.
 
AGAIN THIS YEAR—You can earn CEUs for attending the Exhibitor Solution Theater presentations on the exhibit floor!

CEUs will be awarded for attending Congress education sessions, workshops, Exhibitor Solution Theater presentations and workshop/tours.

APWA uses an electronic system to track attendance at education sessions. The Congress name badge has a bar code on it that contains identifying information specific to each person. To obtain CEUs for the sessions you attend, you MUST have your badge electronically scanned by the room monitors at the end of each session. You must attend the entire session or workshop to be eligible to receive CEU credits.

To comply with CEU recordkeeping standards, those wishing to have their scan data entered into the APWA CEU system must complete a CEU Request Form. A CEU Request Form will be distributed inside the onsite Congress Registration Bags or you may download a form at APWA’s CEU webpage. You may turn in your completed forms either at the onsite APWA Congress Bookstore prior to leaving Congress, or by mailing the form to:

Within four weeks of receiving your CEU Request Form, APWA will enter all of your data into the system and then send you an e-mail notice with instructions for downloading your CEU Transcript from the APWA CEU web page. The fee for obtaining a CEU Transcript is included in your Congress full and daily registration fees!
