Ideal Candidate

DeKalb County Government has an exciting opportunity for an experienced, progressive, innovative, and strong leader to become its next Public Works Director. The ideal candidate will be a strategic, results oriented individual with leadership experience in an organization of comparable size and complexity. The candidate will have broad professional knowledge in managing various public works operations including motor fleet procurement /maintenance, street/drainage design and maintenance, transportation, and solid waste collection/disposal. In addition, the desired candidate will have knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes and ordinances. Solid fiscal management, strong communication, and excellent problem solving skills are essential to successful performance in this position.

The new Public Works Director will have the ability to work collaboratively with elected and appointed officials, and experience transforming strategic plans into operational results that serve the best interest of the County and its citizens.

Position

The Public Works Director is appointed and reports to the COO.  Managing a budget of approximately $129M, responsibilities include overseeing the Office of Public Works as well as the divisions of Fleet Maintenance, Roads & Drainage, Transportation, and Sanitation.  Specific duties include coordinating with the Environmental Protection Division and ensuring the County is in compliance with state standards; overseeing Request for Proposal (RFP) process for design and engineering services; implementing initiatives to improve operational efficiencies and the quality of services provided to the public; managing intergovernmental activities with local, state, and federal agencies; and representing Public Works at all Board of Commissioner meetings.   

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in civil, industrial or a related engineering field, or in Business/Public Administration (Master’s degree preferred); 15 years progressively responsible experience in a large scale Public Works Department or as the City Engineer for a major metropolis, including five years of managerial experience.  Possession of a Professional Engineers (PE) license is a plus.
