APWA Transportation Committee Message from the Chair Anthony Freeman, 2015-2016

Welcome to the APWA Transportation Committee webpage! Transportation is one of the key issue areas of interest for APWA members, and this year promises to be a busy one for transportation activities. The first extension of MAP 21, the federal surface transportation legislation will only last until May 2015 and still has not addressed the core issue of creating a sustainable revenue source.  Current estimates are that 32 percent of the nation’s major roads are in poor or mediocre condition, and 24 percent of its bridges are structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. These factr mpact the strength of our economy, our natural environment, and the well-being of our citizens.

Federal Highway Administration has heard our call for streamlined project delivery processes with their Every Day Counts initiative.  FHWA is also giving a new emphasis to road safety in its Towards Zero Deaths program. The APWA Transportation Committee is working hard to give local public works professionals a voice in all of these developments.

The Transportation Committee has set the following goals for the 2015-2016 year:
  • Streamline Federally-Funded Project Delivery
  • Improve Transportation Safety
  • Promote Sustainable Transportation and Mode Shift Intiatives
  • Support Winter Maintenance Activities
  • Improve Member Communications and engage our young professionals
  • Promote Every Day Counts and Sustainability Rating Systems
  • Continue Partnerships with Assocation Conducting Related Activities
  • Cooperate with other APWA Technical Committees
We have four very active subcommittees that are working on these activities; use the links below to find out more information about their activities:
  • Transportation Safety Subcommittee
  • Transportation Sustainability Subcommittee
  • Federal Transportation Subcommittee
  • Winter Maintenance Subcommittee
  • Project Streamlining Subcommittee
We are always looking for volunteers to help out, particularly at the subcommittee level. Please contact me, or our subcommittee chairs, if you have ideas for how APWA can provide the best information and service on transportation issues to our members. Thank you!
