The misson of the Fleet Services Committee is to support APWA's role as the recognized leader in public works by providing its members with the resources for exchanging and developing ideas, information, skills, knowledge and technologies for the operation, management, and maintenance of public sector vehicle and equipment fleets.  The committee also recommends and advances APWA policies and positions concerning fleet operations. 

A message from Mary Joyce Ivers, Fleet Services Committee Chair, 2013-14:

Welcome to the Fleet Services Technical Committee homepage. This very active committee focuses on professional development and technical industry information related to the acquisition, management, maintenance, sustainability and disposal of public fleet assets and equipment. Following are highlights from the 2013 committee work plan.

Fleet Manager Certification. APWA launched this important program in September of 2006, and to date there are 113 Certified Public Fleet Professionals (CPFP). The certification program includes an eligibility application process, a multiple-choice exam and a recertification application process. The CPFP examination is administered in computer-based formats, offered on a monthly basis. Participants can take at their place of employment or go to a local testing facility in their area.  The 2013-2014 exam schedule and assessment center locations are available on the CPFP web pages.

Donald C. Stone Fleet Technical Specialty Career Track.  APWA's Donald C. Stone (DCS) Center is currently developing technical specialty career tracks for individuals interested in specializing in one or more functional areas within public works, including the Certified Public Fleet Professional (CPFP).  Curriculum for the Fleet Technical Specialty career path has been written and segmented into training modules.  Once released, career path participants will develop a personal professional development plan and have mentors available to help guide them through the program.  The vision for the program, once mature, is that career and professional opportunities will be available in the Fleet trade so that younger professionals will find a place to jumpstart their careers within the public works community.  To have your name placed on the list to receive information as it becomes available, please send an email to education@apwa.net

Publications. Another major area of effort for the committee and APWA staff is the development of quality, technical publications that are easy to understand, loaded with useful information, and offered at the best possible cost. These publications are designed to assist Fleet Managers, Public Works Directors and those interested in developing an understanding of the public fleet industry. All are available online at the APWA bookstore.

FLEET PUBLICATIONS Educational Sessions. The committee provides program development and planning for fleet technical sessions at the APWA North American Snow Conference and the APWA Int'l Public Works Congress & Exposition. Nationally recognized industry leaders are identified to deliver topics of interest at both events. Complimenting the sessions at Congress are on going Fleet Management Workshops, held around the country and in Canada; generally running in conjunction with the workshop are one-day workshops to help the aspiring CPFP prepare for the exam. The committee also works with the education staff to identify topics, develop and plan in-depth, instructional, interactive, Internet-based, educational training that you watch on your PC. APWA offers the Click, Listen and Learn sessions at no cost to members.  Following completion of the live program, the presentation is packaged into handy programs that can be purchased and viewed at a later time. All are available online at the APWA bookstore.
Member’s Library. The Member’s Library is an online resource that provides a varied library of education resources to our Fleet community.  Current educational sessions or online publications are available to browse at your convenience 24/7, as often as you like, without charge.  If you have an interesting Fleet presentation or information that you would like to share with other Fleet professionals, please feel free to contact the Fleet Services Committee.   

Watch for bulletins from APWA national headquarters for the latest information on educational training opportunities.  We recognize that Fleet is a major partner in delivering public works services to our communities.  We collaborate with other APWA Technical Committees, such as Emergency Management, and at a global level with the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia and the International Federation of Municiple Engineers to share ideas, discuss training opportunities, and solve fleet challenges for our communities.

This forum connects you to other public sector fleet management professionals and provides opportunities to post and answer questions to your peers.
