Message from Committee Chair, Stan Brown, P.E., PWLF

Welcome to the APWA Small Cities/Rural Communities webpage!  The Small Cities/Rural Communities Committee is a standing committee established to support communities with a population of less than 75,000 in addressing challenges unique to their population size and/or geographic location.  Smaller and rural communities frequently face different obstacles than larger communities and this Committee provides an on-going opportunity for members to voice concerns, share problems and best practices. Our committee goals are:
  • to promote effective operation of public works functions of small cities/rural communities and to assist in planning for the future of APWA,
  • to provide information on current topics of interested to, or potential regulations which might impact, small cities / rural communities, and
  • to promote outreach from the Chapters to members from small cities/rural communities.
In an effort to achieve our goals, the Committee provides education sessions at the annual APWA Congress and Exposition; includes monthly articles in the APWA Reporter; conducts monthly conference calls; represents SC/RC members as liaisons to APWA technical committees; schedules on-line calls on topics of major interest to SC/RC members; and hosts a Town Hall Meeting during Congress.

Major tasks for the Committee this year are to complete the development/implementation of the Advocacy Tool Kit; finalize a Model Outreach Program; and enhance the SC/RC web page by making it easier to locate and access best practices, took kits, links, and other documents to assist SC/RC members.  We are also continuing to encourage SC/RC members to submit for Project of the Year Awards and to take advantage of the networking opportunities offered through the SC/RC infoNOW Community.

As chair of the Small Cities/Rural Communities Committee, I look forward to hearing about both your challenges and your innovative solutions.  It’s important that we share and learn from one another.  I truly believe that “together we are better”!   If you have ideas on how the Committee can provide better information and service to SC/RC members or would like to be more involved, please contact me.
