Historic buildings make up the core of many communities’ identities. However, as needs change and your community grows, many of these buildings are being repurposed for use that is different from their original intent. What may seem a perfect solution to an empty building could be a nightmare for the facility manager who is expected to oversee improvements and maintain the building.

Retro-commissioning may be the answer. “Retro-commissioning,” is a systematic process applied to existing buildings to identify and implement operational and maintenance improvements and for ensuring their continued performance over time. This process evaluates ways to improve how the building’s equipment and systems function together.

Depending on the age of the building, Retro-Commissioning can often resolve problems that occurred during design or construction, or address problems that have developed throughout the building’s life. This session can help you determine if a property is historic, and what regulations or guidelines to follow.

After viewing this program, participants will be better able to:

* 1 Identify standards or recommendations that would apply to building maintenance, improvements or additions to a historic building.
* 2 Determine the best approach to address the unique challenges of historic buildings as well as identifying typical issues to look out for in different aged buildings.
* 3 What is retro-commissioning and what are the benefits?
