APWA Task Forces are appointed by the president of the association and are created around a specific project or issue. Generally, task forces have a life of one year. Listed below are examples of previous task forces and the documents they
produced. To receive a current list, more information about a specific task force or become involved, contact the APWA.
Asset Management
The Asset Management Task Force delivered its findings in an report in RTF dated August 31, 1998 to the APWA Board of Directors. The Task Force, having completed its work, has been disbanded. The Leadership and Management Committee has been tasked with continuing the work on asset management.
Certification - Task Complete
A national program to certify Public Works/Engineering Managers which would establish recognized prominence as a professional manager.
OBJECTIVE: To meet Goal 3 of the Strategic Plan:
APWA members will have the necessary skills and knowledge to successfully manage public works infrastructures and to deliver public works services in a cost effective manner.
Objective 2: Strengthen the public works profession by using programs such as management practices and accreditation to do so.....
Objective 4: Provide training and education programs that serve the substantive needs of APWA members.
Objective 5: Support APWA Chapters in providing and meeting their educational and training objectives.
Certifying the competency of individual members would compliment the Management Practices program which already provides for accreditation of agencies. Many Chapters have developed successful programs which provide training for various levels of management and supervision. These programs could be combined with a core group of courses to enable members to achieve a national certification which would establish recognized prominence as a professional manager. Participation could be at various levels: to update skills in a specific area, to attain initial competency, or to demonstrate continued proficiency.

Educational Outreach - Task Complete
To enhance the attractiveness of public works careers and foster greater awareness of public works importance to society.
OBJECTIVE: To meet Goal 4 of the Strategic Plan:
The public works services delivered by APWA members will be consistent with community expectations for a quality of life in harmony with the need for sustainable development.
Objective 2: Increase awareness of the scope and role of public works and its importance to the community.
APWA should be actively involved with the educational system to develop and implement programs which increase awareness of the role of public works and its importance to the community. Children should be introduced to the various services provided by public works and the careers available in both engineering and public works throughout their elementary and high school education. If the U.S. and Canada are to continue a leadership role throughout the world, more administrative, technical, and professional public works employees are needed with a strong background in math and science. By developing programs which emphasize environmental and infrastructure needs, students will create an increased awareness among their parents of the critical role played by public works. In addition to these programs, APWA should partner with schools to create an annual nationwide contest which will challenge student teams to compete in engineering/public works related tasks.
