9-24-07 message from Joseph Superneau, Water Resources Management Committee Chair, 2007-08
Welcome to the APWA web site for the Water Resources Management Committee.
Within the public works community, we are all involved with some form of water management. Some are involved in
storm water for street drainage, some for providing drinking water, some for wastewater collection and treatment,
some for agriculture runoff, some for planning, some for design, some for conservation or any combination thereof.
Changing weather patterns, changing regulations and laws, aging infrastructure, higher costs, and rate increases
affect all of us. How we manage through this maze of complexities, maintain perspective and focus on our goals,
is critical to our survival as public works professionals.
The Water Resources Management Committee is made up of professionals who have diverse backgrounds in the water
management field. In 2008 the committee will be looking to expand its collective abilities by tapping into resources
at the chapter level. We plan to contact the chapters and invite representatives to participate in national discussions
by assisting with the review of legislation and regulations that affect our field. We will seek articles for the
Recorder and solicit presenters for the National Congress each year, from a larger collective field of professionals.
In this world of high-speed technology, we are faced with significant amounts of information, some of which is
misinformation. We as water professionals need to speak out in our field of expertise to set the record straight, to
correct the misinformation that many times is presented as fact to our elected officials and the general public. For,
if we don’t respond, the bogus facts will stand by themselves. We cannot let voodoo science prevail over sound engineering
and science. We need your assistance and time to help review proposed legislation and offer testimony through articles or
as a speaker.
Many challenges lie ahead, as the population grows, the demand for water increases, and fulfilling our responsibilities
becomes more and more complex. We need to work together to address the future challenges by providing leadership in the
protection and use of life’s most precious resource, WATER.
We invite you to participate in the activities and actions of the Water Resources Committee. We encourage APWA members
to take part in activities such as InfoNow Communities, conference educational sessions and Click, Listen and Learn topics.
We encourage you to contact members of our committee to collaborate on solving the important issues related to water
resources.
